One of the best materials available is the traditional clay 'quarry tile' This is a very hard wearing item with many virtues. It can stand the heat of an open fire; it will shrug off the bangs and bumps of logs, coal buckets and fire irons; and most of all, it has a lovely reddish hue that perfectly compliments the natural stone colour of your fire surround.
