Winter!

It’s definately winter now. Very icy here in the stone yard, and most of the blocks are frozen together so we won’t be producing much today! Oh well, no one is going to be fitting a stone fireplace or stone staircase before Christmas now are they!?  For those that got better organised, the prospect of snow at Christmas is better than it has been for years, and there’s a good chance some areas will have a good covering on Christmas day. So, what better combination of festive things can you think of?  All the family sitting round a roaring fire with holly around the stone fireplace, and the kids building a snow man outside the front door.

It’s only a week today, and we’ll be working until Wednesday, and then finished until the 4th of January. What a lovely long rest!  We’ve just fetched a massive pile of logs to keep our fireplace well fuelled. Actually there from a plantation that was originally for Christmas trees, but they’re now all about 50 feet high, so a bit big for most houses, although the farmer cut the top 5-10 feet of some of them, and they made lovely trees.

when we fetched the logs, the deer were sheltering amongst the trees to try and avoid the wintry blast, but they didn’t stick around once we started chucking the logs into the trailer! But I’m sure they will be back tonight.

On the subject of warmth: Make sure you have plenty of fuel for your boiler, and plenty of wood for your fire. There can’t be anything worse than running out at Christmas!
