To protect or not to protect…. your stone fireplace.
Tuesday, May 4th, 2010We get about 50/50 of our customers: Those that say ” how can we protect our fireplace from staining” and the other half asking ” how can we age our fireplace or make it look like an antique” The first thing to do is decide which faction you are. If you are installing your new stone fireplace in a period or historic house, then you probably would prefer to have the stone fireplace showing a bit of age? There are various methods to consider: We can use a coarser grade of stone for a start, as this tends to look like it is a little bit worn, and has endured the wear and tear of a few hundred years! Or you can consider distressing by other methods: Rubbing a used tea bag into the corners of the mouldings can also give the impression that your stone fireplaces have endured the grime of a couple of centuries of human contact.
If of course you’re at the other end of the scale, and we’ve made you a sleek contemporary stone fireplace (or stone staircase or other stone feature) then you may want to protect it from the inevitable accident with a glass of red wine or other mishap!
There are various options: You can seal the stone with one of the many silicone sealers. These are clear liquid sealers that prevent any liquid from soaking into the stone. They are easily applied with a brush, or sprayed, and do not appreciably alter the appearance of your stone fireplace. In fact you would be hard pressed to tell that the stone had in fact been treated.
