The first ‘Original’ stone fireplace

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Our first original came about when we were renovating a lovely old farmhouse in Warwickshire. This was one of the most abused houses you could imagine. It had beautiful ‘Georgian’ proportions (but originated much earlier we think) but the wonderful old guy that farmed there was a farmer through and through. He had no real interes in the beauty of the house he lived in, and everything on the property served a purpose primarily for the farm. There were tin-topped lean toos against the rear of the house, holding his chickens and ducks, and there was a breeze block and asbestos roofed tractor shed stuck on the front of the house. If we hadn’t seen it first hand we’d have said it was constructed with photoshop!

However, the time had come to retire, and sell off this lovely old house and some of the older buildings, and thus give him some cash to build a small bungalow, and buy a caravan and go touring England. This man had worked right up to his 70s and still had the desire to get out there and see the world!

Once he had vacated, we started the task of removing all the farm related add-ons and cutting back to the original house, and what a wonderful sight it was as this stunning place rose out of the dust of the surrounding demolition. It was gorgeous three storey house, with fine ( and intact) bevelled stone quoins on each corner. Over each window were wonderful stone lintels with raised keystones, and the front door, until now obscured by the block tractor shed, had a stunning and largely undamaged (surprisingly) pedimented stone surround.  (stone fireplace connection comes later!)
